The jet circles the castle in a smooth and steady arc, and I wonder if the pilot is looking for a place to touch down. There aren't a lot of runways in Ashgrave, but I’m not making anything happen until I know for sure who this is.

Yeah, it’s me, Harper texts back.

I let out a small sigh of relief.

Time to see what’s going on—and what Harper needs.

The jet lands on a large strip of stone along the outskirts of Ashgrave, and I figure we’re going to need to make some sort of landing pad if this is going to become a regular thing.

Thanks to a strategic stairwell Ashgrave conjured for me, I appear to be the first one to greet our visitors. As I step out into the sunlight, the cool air gently caresses my face, and I suck in a deep breath.

It’s nice to have a bit of a distraction amongst all the war planning.

The jet’s cockpit pops open, and the pilot stands, taking off his helmet. I see a familiar face, and the moment our eyes connect, Russell smiles broadly at me.

“Long time no see,” he says, grinning.

“I didn't know you could fly jets,” I admit, laughing. “Isn't that kind of a pointless skill when you're a dragon shifter?”

“It's fun,” he says, shrugging as he climbs out. “Harper's on the way in the chopper.”

I look over the jet and into the sky as the helicopters approach, grinning as the thunder of footsteps on the grass echoes behind me. Without looking over my shoulder, I can recognize Jace, Drew and—

“That's a hell of a jet!” Tucker says, running up, the familiar shuffle of his gait like a song to my heart.

I laugh as I look over my shoulder, all four of my men coming closer, and I'm not at all surprised that I still can't detect Levi's silent gait. Our eyes meet, and he smiles gently.

“To what do we owe the pleasure?” I ask Russell as he walks over and gives me a hug.

“A gift from us to you,” Russell says, gesturing back at the jet. “Well, I guess technically to Tucker.”

“That's for me?” Tucker says, his eyebrows shooting up his face. “Are you serious?”

“The chopper is, too,” Russell adds as the whir of the blades get closer. “Well, one of them is. We're using the other to get back home, since Harper is easy to spot when she flies.”

“Oh, Russell!” Tucker says not bothering to mask his playfully sarcastic tone. “You've made me the happiest girl in the world!”

We all laugh as the choppers near, setting down beside the jet. Seconds later, Harper jumps out, and a few dojo soldiers follow. Jace's face lights up, and he jogs over to greet them. They clasp hands and laugh, talking about something I can't hear over the whir of the blades.

Harper jogs toward me and smiles, gesturing back at them. “What do you think?”

“I think you're the best damn friend I've ever had,” I admit, laughing. “This is far too generous, Harper.
